Hurricane Evacuation!

What about your pet?

Did you know that Red Cross

shelters do not allow pets?

In the event of an emergency, a well practiced disaster program will not only reduce stress but also save precious time and lives. Listed below are recommendations to help keep you and your animals safe and calm during a disaster.

Before Disaster Strikes:

  • Identify Your Pets:

Keep your pet’s vaccinations/license current and make sure that collar and identification tags are affixed securely and worn at all times. Have your pet Microchipped. In the chaos that accompanies hurricane evacuation, tags can become lost or unreadable.

  • Crate Train Your Pet:

Train your dog and cat to come and enter its carrier at your command.

This will familiarize you pet in the event of an emergency; reducing the

stress of evacuation for you and your pet.

  • Prepare a "Pet Survival Kit

_ Sturdy crate and/or carrier (labeled) with bedding and toys

_ Blankets

_ Identification and rabies tags on

collars for both dogs and cats

_ Muzzle and leashes

_ Food/water (7-day supply for each pet and food should be kept in a watertight container)

_ No spill bowls

_ Litter/litter box

_ Any special medication(s)

_ Manual can opener/plastic lid

_ Copy of your pet’s current vaccination history (in waterproof bag)

_ Recent photos of you pet

_ Pet First-Aid book

_ Pet First-Aid kit

_ Phone numbers of local emergencyveterinary clinic

_ Grooming supplies

_ Long-term confinement equipment such as chains, cable runs and/or tie out stakes, portable caging

_ Large plastic bags for cat litter disposal and dog clean up

_ Newspapers and paper towels/wet wipes

_ Cleansers and disinfectants

_ Flashlight and spare batteries

_ Emergency phone numbers

In Case of Evacuation:

In an event of a disaster and/or evacuation, the most important thing

you can do is protect your pet is to evacuate them too! Again, Red Cross shelters do not accept pets. So, prepare a list of back up arrangements, such as homes of friends and family, hotels, which allow pets, boarding facilities, vet hospitals, and/or animal shelters.

Pet Friendly Hotels:

This basic list of pet friendly hotels should help you prepare for your pets to

be evacuated and not remain behind.
